Recovery update!

Hello all - it has been a long couple weeks!
As you all know, I had ACL reconstruction surgery on Friday, October 24th.  The surgery went really well, and I've been working pretty darn hard in PT.  I've been in a lot of pain, on account of the fact that rather than using the dissolving screws to affix the patellar tendon in place of the ACL, my amazing surgeon ended up using portions of my own tibia.  Using bone plugs is actually better in the long run as it affixes bone to bone as opposed to the screws which dissolve over time and the risk of a re-tear is higher.

That being said, the pain from the incision sites has been minor compared to the deep bone aches that have been occurring.  Without going into a lot of detail, I was unable to continue taking the pain medication after the first couple days because they made me incredibly sick.  While recovering from ACL reconstruction without pain medication is not ideal, it is much better than being so sick.  I have been able to work from home and work really hard in PT.

I've increased my range of motion in my knee to 85 degrees only 1 week post-op, I am able to be 50% weight bearing, and I've been cleared to drive.  My PT has advised me that if I continue working as hard as I have been, I could be completely off my crutches in a couple weeks.  I have another appointment with my orthopedic surgeon to have my stitches removed later today and I cannot wait.  Showering on one leg is becoming slightly annoying. :)

Of note, when I was in recovery after surgery, the first thing I said when I woke up was..."Can I go for a run now?"  The recovery room nurse told me that my surgeon's PA laughed and said we'd probably have to wait on that for awhile, but that at least I remembered what my main goal is!

I will post more frequent updates and also put up a more in depth post soon of the last couple weeks - happy Thursday!

  1. Great news all around! Thanks for sharing that! You just showed us that not all injuries are untenable and there are several ways out of them. I admire your optimism, amidst everything. Keep it up! Take care always!
